Umphrey’s McGee has been gearing up for a huge 2018, which will mark the group’s 20th year together as a band. In honor of the forthcoming anniversary, the Chicago jam giant will release their brand new album, it’s not us, next year on January 12th. Since the album’s initial announcement during the tail end of November, in the weeks since, Umphrey’s has slowly been teasing the album, previously dropping the album’s lead single, “The Silent Type”, on streaming services as well as for a special Record Store Day Black Friday release.
Umphrey’s McGee Releases New Single “The Silent Type”, Track List For ‘it’s not us’
The new track, “The Silent Type”, features catchy vocals with a huge hook laid over 1980’s-era-sounding synthesizer, guitar parts, and pulsating back-beat. It is a good example of the progression of Umphrey’s McGee’s sound while remaining true to who they are as a band. If this track is an example of what’s to come on it’s not us, then fans of the band have a lot to look forward to. Today, Forbes dropped the official music video for Umphrey’s McGee “The Silent Type”. Focused on the band’s de facto hometown of Chicago, the video shows a technology-fueled romp across the Windy City.
Umphrey’s McGee Extends 2018 Tour With Marcus King Band, BIG Something, Organ Freeman, & More
Joining forces with Dallas-based multi-media creative studio Reel FX, the video blends together hyper-reality and augmented reality and speaks to the band’s ability to remain at the forefront of innovation and technology. Complementing the lyrics of the song, the story begins with an illicit cigarette drag offered by a smoky brunette. Enticed by the connection made inside his retro user interface, he slowly becomes incapable of distinguishing artificial intelligence from reality and a crazy night of Chicago debauchery ensues. To achieve this feeling, the team experimented with frantic edits, bold colors and UI overlays. An ode to the band’s biggest fans, the video is peppered with hidden items from their 20 year career.
