Umphrey’s McGee was without their main drummer Kris Myers for their scheduled performance at Florida’s Suwannee Rising on Saturday night. Thankfully, with other like-minded bands also in attendance for the outdoor festival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL, the prog-rock outfit was still able to play their two-set headlining performance with help from Ben Atkind (Goose) and Adam Deitch (Lettuce), while U.M. percussionist Andy Farag also stepped up to fill in on solo drumming duties.
Umphrey’s two-set performance opened with Farag on drums for renditions of “The Silent Type”, “Hajimemashite”, and their cover of Pink Floyd‘s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”. Jake Cinninger also helped out on drums during “The Triple Wide”, and the guitarist stayed behind the kit for “Sociable Jimmy” before Umphrey’s welcomed Goose’s Ben Atkind to play on their cover of Talking Heads‘ “Making Flippy Floppy” to close the first set.

Farag was back on drums when the band returned to the stage to open the second set with “Glory”, and continued with renditions of “Attachments” and “Den” before Cinninger found himself behind the kit again for the three-part combination of “Much Obliged” > “Soul Food I” > “Soul Food II”. It was then Adam Deitch’s turn to showcase his stuff for the band’s bust-out cover of Mötley Crüe‘s “Dr. Feelgood”, which Umphrey’s hadn’t played since their 2018 New Year’s Eve show in Atlanta. Deitch remained on stage for the set-closing take on “Push the Pig”. Deitch and the band returned to wrap the night’s festivities with a one-song encore covering David Bowie‘s “Fame”, closing an Umphrey’s performance that fans in attendance likely won’t forget anytime soon.
Following the weekend’s festivities, Myers took to his personal Instagram on Monday, confirming he had contracted COVID-19 resulting in his missed performance. Feel better Kris!
