Umphrey’s McGee gave Seattle a taste of Appalachia on Saturday with the band’s first cover of Tyler Childers‘ “Whitehouse Road” since 2021. The concert at Showbox At The Market marked the penultimate show of the band’s scenic journey through the Pacific Northwest with service to Oregon and Washington.

The cover lifted from Childers’ breakthrough 2017 LP Purgatory arrived at the tail end of the second set. Following the It’s Not Us staple “Remind Me”, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss picked up a slide while lead guitarist Jake Cinninger plucked some honky-tonk pickin’. Rolling into the rocky rhythm, Cinninger took lead vocals as Umphrey’s McGee imbued a bluesy quality to the country singalong. Umphrey’s McGee hasn’t covered the song since July 24th, 2021, per All Things Umphrey’s.

These days, Childers isn’t up to much of the mischief detailed in “Whitehouse Road”. Following the release of 2020’s Long Violent History, the Kentucky singer-songwriter went quiet as he pursued longterm sobriety. Last year, he reemerged from studio silence with Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?, an expansive three-part gospel album. Childers’ spiritual redemption arrived several months after he and his wife/fellow performer Senora May announced they were expecting their first child. This spring, Childers will head out on the Send In The Hounds Tour, his first full-fledged outing since before the pandemic.

The band will resurface this weekend for a sold-out, three-night run at the intimate Belly Up Aspen in Colorado. Full touring details are available on UM’s website.
