Voodoo Dead made their triumphant return on Wednesday night at the Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA where they were joined by moe. guitarist Al Schnier for the entire performance.

Comprised of lead guitarist Steve Kimock, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti (Dead & Company), New Orleans’ king of bass, George Porter Jr. (The Meters), and drummer John Morgan Kimock (Mike Gordon Band), Voodoo Dead intertwines the spirit of New Orleans with the vibe of the Grateful Dead. What started as a NOLA Jazz Fest collaboration in 2015 has transformed into a world-touring Dead fan-favorite.

The group kicked things off with three Dead tracks, “Loose Lucy”, “Bertha”, and “Black Muddy River” before a jam section led to a cover of Johnny Cash‘s “Big River”. A cover of the seasonally-appropriate “Mardi Gras Mambo”, originally sung by Art Neville with The Hawketts, followed. The group closed out their first set with a take on The Young Rascals‘ “Good Lovin'”.

Set two began with the classic Dead segue, “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!”, before a take on Cannon’s Jug Stompers‘ “Big Railroad Blues”. The Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter-penned “They Love Each Other” sat in the middle of set two. Then, a massive “New Speedway Boogie” and Howlin’ Wolf‘s “Smokestack Lightning” segue ensued, which contained a “New Speedway Boogie” reprise. A cover of The Crickets‘ “Not Fade Away” ended the two-set show in proper Grateful Dead fashion.
