The Big Apple will honor late Steely Dan co-founder and Queens, NY native Walter Becker with a street that bears his name. The New York City Council has voted to rename the street on which Becker was raised in Forest Hills, Queens, as “Walter Becker Way.” The motion to co-name “Walter Becker Way” was put forward by New York City Council Member Karen Koslowitz of the 29th District (Forest Hills) by way of a legislative bill, which was approved by a full council vote on June 28th.

The street sign will be posted on the corner of 112th Street and 72nd Drive. According to a release that mirrors the late Becker’s sly sense of humor, “This represents the kind of street credibility that Becker truly would have appreciated!” As the press release continues, the sign will be officially unveiled on October 28th at a ceremony presented by New York’s Classic Rock Q104.3 featuring “special guests, remembrances from Becker’s friends and colleagues, as well as very special give-aways.”

“Walter’s fans have decades of experience holding ‘Danfests’ throughout the country,” says Becker’s widow, Delia, in a statement, “and they always find innovative and eclectic ways of celebrating. It will undoubtedly be a fun and free gathering to honor and commemorate Walter as only they can!”

The New York City Council customarily uses street co-naming to honor New York-based activists, cultural heroes, and community leaders whose contributions continue to reverberate in the city and beyond. This is not the first time Walter Becker’s accomplishments have been honored on a public stage in New York City. On October 29th, 2015, when the Empire State Building celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Master FM Antenna, which sits atop the world-famous skyscraper and anchors the iconic Manhattan skyline. Legendary lighting designer Marc Brickman—who has also orchestrated Empire State Building light shows for GD50 and Dead & Company—fittingly choreographed the LED Tower Lights to Steely Dan’s 1978 hit, “FM (No Static at All).” The song was written as the lead single for the film FM, which was about disc jockeys working at a popular radio station fighting to keep radio freeform.
