Heavy raining and flooding forced the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to cancel its festivities yesterday, leaving artists like Snoop Dogg, Dr. John, The Lone Bellow and Stevie Wonder unable to perform. Wonder seemed particularly broken up about missing his performance, as he came out on stage with a megaphone to address any disappointed fans that had gathered.

While there, Wonder promised fans that he would return to New Orleans this year, and shared that he was planning to dedicate his whole performance to the memory of Prince. With a small crowd assembled for the impromptu appearance, Wonder led a sing-along version of “Purple Rain” through his megaphone.

Watch how it all went down below:

While Stevie Wonder wasn’t able to perform for the thousands that would have assembled for his Acura Stage set, the legend did make it to Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse, the club inside the Royal Sonesta. According to NOLA.com, Wonder showed up to watch Mayfield’s set, which included Trombone Shorty, before treating fans to an off-the-wall performance. Wonder would play the harmonica, harpejji, guitar, and, of course, the piano during the performance, offering takes on classics like “Purple Rain,” “St. James Infirmary,” and “Overjoyed.”
