On Monday, Weird Al Yankovic made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a performance of “One More Minute” that the musical comedian recorded from his self-quarantine location. The remote nature of The Tonight Show began amid the coronavirus pandemic that has led to government-mandated social distancing and self-quarantine guidelines across the country and the cancellation of virtually all live events.

To open the segment, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon explained his thought process behind asking Weird Al to perform the song: “The other night I was listening to music with my wife during dinner, as we always do, and I was realizing that some songs sound different now that there’s a pandemic. And one song that I was playing is one of my favorites by Weird Al Yankovic, called “One More Minute”,” he said before the camera cut to Yankovic’s pre-recorded video.

After joking that this was the first time he had performed on The Tonight Show without pants, Weird Al explained that “One More Minute is “Sort of about social distancing, so [it’s] kinda topical,” eluding to the fact that many people are stuck inside their homes with people they may or may not wish to spend weeks on end with.

Weird Al then began his performance of the Dare To Be Stupid song with a backing track and without his usual band. The song is about a bitter breakup where Al sings about a lost lover and all the things he would rather do than spend time with them, such as repeatedly slamming his fingers in a door, cleaning the Grand Central Station bathrooms with his tongue, and diving into a swimming pool full of double-edged razor blades. Of course, while many Americans enter their second or third week of coronavirus quarantine, the song’s humorous lyrics hit a bit deeper and become more relatable than ever.
