Widespread Panic will head to Charleston, SC’s Credit One Stadium in early May 2023 for a two-night run. In an unusual move for Panic, the Charleston shows will feature openings acts, with Charleston-native synthwave outfit Doom Flamingo set to open the night on Friday, May 5th and Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country due to get the party started on Saturday, May 6th.
The two-night run at the outdoor stadium will mark the Athens, GA rockers’ first performances in the area since Trondossa Music Festival in North Charleston in 2019. While Widespread Panic typically performs without an opening act, both Doom Flamingo and Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country have pre-existing connections with the band.
Doom Flamingo has performed as part of multiple Panic-led events, from a late-night show during Trondossa 2019 to a pair of performances in Mexico at Panic En La Playa Once earlier this year. In 2021, Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country notably performed a show outside Milwaukee, WI’s Riverside Theater on the day officially declared “Widespread Panic Day” by the city’s mayor, Tom Barrett. As Donato explained of how the Panic pre-show came to be in an interview with Live For Live Music, “[my manager] was like, ‘Can Cosmic Country open up the show?’ And they were like, ‘Well, no, nobody opens up the show.’ So he goes, ‘Well, how bout outside? The boys will play the f— outside, they don’t care.’ And they’re like, ‘Sure!’
Donato continued, “After we finished the 3rd song, the Widespread Panic team and the mayor of Milwaukee come walking out under the tent where we’re playing and had this whole ordeal that was unbeknownst to us. And to me, that was such a beautiful time to appreciate all the work that band has put in after all this time and being persistent in their vision. To be there to witness that feet away from me, it was such a green light. I was reminded how young and how new I am to this. It was a reminder like, ‘Hey, your journey is just getting started, kid. Take it easy.’ This is potentially what lies ahead for you down this road of unlimited devotion.”
