Country music legend Willie Nelson is set to release a new book, Energy Follows Thought: The Stories Behind My Songs, in honor of his 90th birthday. For the first time ever, Nelson will share the stories behind the lyrics of 160 of his favorite songs along with never-before-seen photos and ephemera.

The book will take readers on a journey through Nelson’s extensive career, from his earliest work in the 1950s to his biggest hits, with stories about his guitar Trigger, his family, and his collaborations with other legendary musicians such as Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, and Dolly Parton.

Nelson is reflective and disarmingly honest as he meditates on the nature of songwriting and the process of finding his voice. He explores many of the themes that have been central to his music including relationships, infidelity, love, loss, friendship, life on the road, and—of particular importance as he reaches 90 years of age—mortality.

Energy Follows Thought: The Stories Behind My Songs promises to be “revealing, funny, whimsical, and wise” just like Willie himself. The book is due out on October 31st, 2023 via Harper Collins and is currently available for pre-order here.

Willie Nelson recently bolstered the lineup for this year’s traveling Outlaw Music Festival with the addition of Bob Weir, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The String Cheese Incident, and more.
