Two years ago at the height of the mid-term election, Willie Nelson shared a politically charged single, “Vote ‘Em Out“, at a concert in support of Democratic senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. Now, just ahead of the most contentious election in recent memory, Nelson has shared a new animated lyric video for “Vote ‘Em Out”, breathing new life into the 2018 single.

While the song was written to drum up support for O’Rourke’s senatorial campaign against Ted Cruz, which O’Rourke would ultimately lose, its lyrics and message can be applied to any election, especially as one as polarized as 2020.

Nelson doesn’t sugarcoat the lyrics or make the listener read between the lines.

“If you don’t like who’s in there, vote ’em out,” he says in the opening verse. “That’s what Election Day is all about/The biggest gun we’ve got/Is called the ballot box”/So if you don’t like who’s in there vote ’em out.”

While it’s hard to tell if Nelson’s song made all the difference, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2018 election had the highest voter turnout in a midterm in four decades, compared to the previous in 2014 which had the lowest. Still, American’s have a lot of work to do in boosting those numbers as only 53.4% of voting-age citizens actually made their way to the ballot box in that election. Even in the Presidential election just two years previous, which usually have a higher voter turnout, only 61.4% showed up, slightly down from the 61.8% that voted in 2012.

Though it’s unlikely that a lyric video can have a meaningful impact on voter turnout, Nelson’s newest video still offers a new way to listen to the election season tune.
