Yo La Tengo continue their ongoing single series via the group’s new Bandcamp page with their fourth release in as many days. Since Monday, the experimental indie rock group has released new recordings daily as captured during quarantine rehearsals in their Hoboken, NJ studio space.
The new recording shared on Thursday is titled, “Georgia considers the two blue ones (Thursday)”, and follows the previously-shared “James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday)”, “Georgia thinks it’s probably okay (Tuesday)”, and “James gets up and watches mourning birds with Abraham (Wednesday)”.
Thursday’s release contains a little more power than the previous tracks, and stretches out to a lengthy 8:16 minutes, allowing the group to fully explore where the music is heading. The instrumental gallops along with a tribal-like drum pattern while guitarist Ira Kaplan chimes in at times with subtle notation for some added quirkiness to an otherwise drone-driven listening experience.
As guitarist Ira Kaplan previously explained about their new Bandcamp releases,
If you’ve spent any time hanging out with us at our rehearsal space in Hoboken—that pretty much covers none of you—you’ve heard us playing formlessly (he said, trying to sidestep the word “improvising”). Most of the songs we’ve written in the last 25 years have begun that way, but often we do it for no other reason than to push away the outside world.
In late April, with the outside world weighing on everybody, we determined that the three of us could assemble in Hoboken without disobeying the rules laid out by Governor Murphy, and resumed . . . “practicing” hardly describes it, because we’ve done no practicing per se, and anyway what would be practicing for . . . playing. James set up one microphone in the middle of the room in case we stumbled on something useful for the future. Instead we decided to release something we did right now.
