Members of Yonder Mountain String Band began the new year on Friday by looking back and paying tribute to Tony Rice with a cover of “Cold On The Shoulder”. The video comes after Rice’s death on December 25th.
Though the song was originally written by Gordon Lightfoot, the flatpicking pioneer recorded his own version and even made it the title track to his 1984 album. Adam Aijala and Nick Piccininni, who perform the cover as a duo, note that they use Rice’s arrangement.

The cover finds Picccinni trading in his mandolin for a guitar to assist Aijala on the traditional cover. Together, the two musicians split vocal duties as they also employ the guitar picking style Rice served as a forefather of, thus carrying on his legacy despite the absence of his corporeal body in this world.
