This past Thursday night, Scranton, PA-based bluegrass outfit Cabinet and fellow string band, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, dealt with some inclement weather and driving conditions on Colorado’s I-70 to make it up to Fort Collins just in time for their show at the Aggie Theatre. Those in attendance were glad they did, because both bands put on a clinic.

A surprise last-minute announcement of Greensky BluegrassDave Bruzza joining the festivities for an opening solo set gave everybody a little more motivation to get out and to the venue early. Bruzza performed close to an hour set of covers and Greensky numbers, including “I’d Probably Kill You” and a touching number that he wrote for his wife.

Both Horseshoes & Hand Grenades put on sizzling sets featuring some fine picking on stage and plenty of foot stomping from those drinking barley-laced ales in the crowd. Horseshoes put their own twist on a cover of Cee Lo Green‘s “Crazy,” and brought out Dave Bruzza later on in their set for some interesting collaborations. Cabinet’s set was full of energy, as is the norm from the East Coast group. “Poor Man’s Blues” witnessed the band firing on all cylinders and receiving the love from the grass-friendly crowd.

Cabinet will be making their way back east for the New Year’s celebration, while Horseshoes and Hand Grenades will play a hometown show in Wisconsin on NYE, and will support Leftover Salmon in Chicago in February. Greensky Bluegrass plays a 3-night run at Denver’s Ogden Theatre beginning December 1st. Check out some video from the performance in Fort Collins below:
