While Bonnaroo continues to be one of the biggest music festivals in all of North America, the jam faithful will remember the festival’s earliest years steeped in the scene. The first-year lineup alone featured Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio Band, The String Cheese Incident, Gov’t Mule, and so many more jam-friendly acts, a tradition born out of promoter Superfly‘s role in bringing many of today’s top jam acts through NOLA in the early 2000s. The promotional company’s late-night superjams in New Orleans were the stuff of legends, and out of this spirit came the famous “Superjam” that Bonnaroovians have come to know and love.

At Bonnaroo 2003, Dr. John hosted a New Orleans-themed Superjam with Mike Gordon (Phish), Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars), Stanton Moore (Galactic), Duwayne Burnside, and G. Love—one of the most memorable sessions in recent Bonnaroo memory.

The star-studded group played through a number of NOLA/Dr. John classics, like “Iko Iko” and “Right Place Wrong Time”, as well as classic blues staples like “The Sky Is Crying”. It’s a true testament to great music that these renowned artists would join together and jam!
