Next week in NYC, members of The New Mastersounds and The Nth Power will come together to form an exciting new project, JUKEJOINT. While we know anything from this funky group of cats is guaranteed to be next level, we wanted to know exactly what this new venture would entail, so we caught up with bandmembers Nate Edgar, Nikki Glaspie, Joe Tatton, and Jeffrey Lockhart to find out what to expect at American Beauty NYC on March 15th.

“You can expect us to be going in on some classic funk and deeper ‘B’ side cuts, and taking some musical chances with them,” explains Edgar of the experimental new project. “We will be drawing on the funk and soul side of things, with a few surprises along the way, of course. We will be taking this new opportunity to explore not only a catalog of music we know and love, but also playing in a more free and open way than we do in our respective main projects.”

“We’ve been hand picking some wicked old funk tunes and putting together a set that will really get people’s groove going!” adds Tatton.

As for the origin of the concept, Edgar explains, “A juke joint, being a place where people get together to get down, socialize and hang is the vibe we hope prevails with the music we will be throwing out there from the stage. And in turn we hope it’s the vibe we get back from the crowd! It’s an informal, yet throwdown vibe we will be sharing.”

“I bumped into Nate at a gig in New York last year,” Tatton adds, “and we both said straight away we should get something like this together. Both of these kinds of music are well represented in Nth Power and New Mastersounds but from different angles, so we knew it would be a great, fun project.”

The bandmembers are all clearly stoked to play with one another, and expressed their excitement at the prospect.”Knowing Nate and Nikki well from Nth Power I was really excited at the prospect,” adds Tatton. “I think it’s only when you put a whole new thing together that it opens up everyone’s playing and there’s a real buzz in the music. I can’t wait to jam and am really pleased to be sharing the stage with these guys next week.”

“Nikki and I have always loved Joe’s vibe and playing,” says Edgar. “He’s a beast and is one humble man as well. At times we garnish him with the same name The Nth Power refers to me sometimes…the ‘Silent Killer’. We’ve all heard each other play so many times and have gotten to know each other from a bystanders’ point of view. It’s going to be a blast to get in there and play with the sounds we are so familiar with.”

“And then there is Jeffery Lockhart,” continues Edgar. “He is one of the baddest guitar players on earth and has been a huge influence on countless musicians. He is one of Nikki and my ‘teachers’, so to speak, from our days in Boston. He is just a beast and can really reach and go for things that move the music, the musicians on stage, and the people lucky enough to be there to hear him. We have both played countless gigs with this cosmic man and look forward to reuniting with him in JUKEJOINT to continue the vibes of growth and community. It’s not often one can bring musicians together like this, and we can’t wait to share it with y’all!”
