Medeski Martin and Wood recently released their fourth album (one live and three studio albums) with longtime collaborator John Scofield, titled Juice. The album is a collection of free jazz tunes, including some instrumental renditions of classic rock favorites like “Light My Fire” by The Doors, “The Times They Are A-Changin” by Bob Dylan and “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream. The instrumentals are loose, inspired by the original tunes, but given that MSMW funky groovy twist like none other. Now, they’re bringing that Juice sound to NYC on December 11th, for one funk-fusion-filled night at Terminal 5!

Scofield first partnered with MMW on the 1998 album A Go Go, a jazz-funk inspired instrumental album complete with 10 original Scofield compositions. Medeski Martin and Wood took the lead on the 2006 release, Out Louder, the first to be released under the “Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood” moniker. While A Go Go featured more structured compositions, Out Louder was an experimental attempt at spontaneous co-composition. With four virtuostic musicians, that experiment was naturally successful.

While the four musicians have played together intermittently, Juice marks the absolute fusion between Scofield’s jazz-funk and MMW’s avant-garde-jazz approaches. The common ground are African and Latin influences, blended into the shuffling riffs of American rock music, and the result is wholly compelling music.
