There has been much anticipation and speculation in regards to the idea of whether or not Electric Zoo will be returning to New York City this summer. The three-day electronic music event held at Randall’s Island was shut down last year due to the result of two deaths of young festival goers, but still wants to return for 2014’s festival season.

Festival promoters have hired Mike McKeon and Patrick Jenkins, two high-powered lobbyists, to help persuade new mayor Bill de Blasio to get on board, The New York Daily News reports. McKeon actually helped raise money for de Blasio’s campaign, so fingers are crossed that securing a park’s department permit for the festival is doable.

Jeffrey Ross, 23, and Olivia Rotondo, 20, both died at the festival last Labor Day weekend due to overdosing on Ecstasy/Molly, or something pawned off as such. The drug has gained much media attention to being connected to electronic music scene. Though these overdoses did occur on Randall’s Island, since then, concerts have still been held there.

Made Events, the production company in charge of Electric Zoo, has staked out two possible weekends for the festival to take place this summer. The production company also has the chance to prove that they have everything together as they prepare and carry out Electric Zoo in Mexico City, set to take place the weekend of May 3rd and 4th.

Stay tuned for more news on whether or not Electric Zoo will be returning to New York City this year.
