It’s a tough time to be a fan of the short-lived power rock trio Cream. Though only together for a few years, the band produced some of the most iconic cuts of the classic blues rock era, electrifying tracks like “Sunshine of Your Love,” “White Room,” “SWLABR,” a version of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and countless others. Bassist Jack Bruce’s death in 2015 all but put an end to any hope of this exciting trio’s reunion potential.

Then, earlier this year, Eric Clapton told reporters that he might not play guitar publicly anymore, after nerve damage has hindered his playing abilities. The latest news on the band is about drummer Ginger Baker, who is currently recovering from an open-heart surgery operation that took place last month. The 76-year-old also suffered a fall, one that has caused additional health problems.

In The Mirror, Baker’s daughter Leda shared a recent health update. “He called the day after his surgery to say he was OK. Albeit a rather disoriented and unintelligible conversation he was at least awake and aware. The fall has resulted in swollen legs and feet which he is seeing his doctor about in the next day or so.” The drummer had to cancel a tour in February due to heart problems.

The outlook for future Baker performances does not look good. “Although he is recovering, any performances in the near future seem overambitious,” said Leda. Still, she also says that he is “on the road to recovery,” so we’ll still stay optimistic and hope for the best.
