Cynthia Lennon, John Lennon’s first wife and mother of Julian, passed away earlier at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer at her home in Mallorca, Spain. Cynthia was there at the early beginnings of the Beatles up until 1968, when after months of John denying a relationship with Yoko Ono, she came home from vacation to find the two together in the couple’s home. Months later, she officially filed divorce papers; the two were together for ten years.

She essentially raised Julian on her own, with very little, if any, help from John, and went on to write two memoirs, 1978’s A Twist of Lennon and 2005’s John, which detailed an insider’s perspective of living within the Beatles’ early inner circle, their rise to fame, and the insecurities of John. Despite the tumultuous history, Cynthia seemed to have made peace with it all and was even behind the unveiling of the John Lennon Peace Monument, along with Julian, which was dedicated to the fallen star on what would have been his 70th birthday on October 9th, 1970 at Chavasse Park in Liverpool.

Rest in Peace, Cynthia.
