Quintessential hip-hop group De La Soul hopes to release their first full-length album in more than a decade, but they’re recruiting your help to do so.

The trio’s Kickstarter campaign explains that they’ve thrived without a record label interfering with their creative process thus far and hope to carry on as independent artists, but can’t do so without proper funding. The project has already surpassed $100,000 out of a $110,000 goal as of the date of this post.

Even before securing funding an all-star lineup is promised for the record. Damon Albarn (Gorillaz/Blur), David Byrne (Talking Heads), 2 Chainz and Little Dragon are all slated for collaborations. Albarn collaborated with De La Soul on the 2005 Gorillaz hit Feel Good Inc., which won a Grammy.

The album will incorporate elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country Western, and “anything else [they’re] feeling in the moment.” They’ve also recorded about 200 hours worth of jam session tape to be used for sampling. The group got in trouble back in 1991 in one of the earliest sampling cases ever, for ripping off The Turtles on their 3 Feet High and Rising, so they’re taking a unique approach by sampling themselves.

An investment in the project can score you an advance copy of the album, thumb drives shaped like band members’ heads, autographed merch, one of Dave’s old school boomboxes, dinner with the band, the opportunity to Skype with them and more. Donate here!
