Not withstanding 2010’s The Fall, it’s been five long years since English virtual band Gorillaz have released a traditional album, but all that looks to be coming to an end as the band is prepping for a new album in 2016.

The Gorlilaz’s Damon Albarn has previously stated that work on the album would commence in September, and now it looks as though there is some truth to it, as Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett confirmed in a DIY Mag interview that he is shutting himself away to work on the album.

He says, “I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again.”

Take a look at some of Hewlett’s artwork that he has been posting on Instagram in anticipation of the new album:
