On Tuesday night, Gov’t Mule performed at Jessye Norman Amphitheater in Augusta, Georgia. With Galactic as an opener, the concert opened the door to various moments of excellence. It was also the birthday of Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 75 on the date. In celebration of such, frontman Warren Haynes opened the show with his original tune “Patchwork Quilt,” which he wrote when the Grateful Dead frontman died in 1995.

The theme was immediately set, and Galactic drummer Stanton Moore joined the group for a rhythmic version of “Dark Star,” then “Morning Dew.” Gov’t Mule isn’t shy to incorporate fist fulls of covers into their setlist, and Tuesday night proved a good reason why. Especially with Warren Haynes’ association with The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, and more, these songs are especially meaningful for the former Allman Brothers Band guitarist to perform–and especially on “Jerry Day.” On the heels of Mule’s most recent album release, the set contained plenty of originals, including “Sarah, Surrender” and “Revolution Come, Revolution Go.” Toward the end of the set, Moore returned to the stage to complete “Dark Star” with a “Drums” jam with Matt Abts. Saxophonist Ben Ellman joined for the set-closing “Blind Man In The Dark,” before the band played a “Dear Prudence Encore.”
