With the upcoming Fare Thee Well 50th Anniversary shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field July 4th weekend, Deadheads are signing a petition for stadium and city officials to allow for camping options for the Grateful Dead‘s “Core Four’s” final shows together. According to an AP report, via Monroe News, fan Jeremy Davis of Florida, has started an online petition that has already collected approximately 8,000 signatures (as of this past Saturday), asking the city to consider overnight parking options in parking lots surrounding Soldier Field.

With over 60,000+ fans expected for the weekend, one point brought up in the petition was that camping options would considerably reduce traffic congestion, and many fans taking the long, strange trip to Chi-town would be more than willing to pay for the opportunity to congregate with fellow Deadheads in this type of setting one last time.

Soldier Field spokesman Luca Serra discussed the request, “While we understand the desires of some of the community, this is something that requires a cooperative evaluation from several entities to make a determination,” which is more than a fair statement considering the additional resources and planning involved to coordinate with police, fire, and other emergency agencies.

As Davis puts it, “This is the last chance for the family to be together.”
