Spotify recently implemented “Discover Weekly”, a personalized playlist based on the music you and similar users have been listening to that refreshes every Monday. Unlike Pandora and similar algorithm-based curated music streams, Discover Weekly isn’t confined to one genre or style. If you’re like most of us, you probably have major music ADD, so variety is key. To give you an idea, my current Discover Weekly includes tunes from Cold War Kids, Father John Misty, Q-Tip, Disclosure, Arcade Fire, Porter Robinson, Railroad Earth, Black Joe Lewis and Hot 8 Brass Band, just to name a few. Though the music tends to be all over the map, it’s pretty damn good at nailing exactly what you want to hear and really hitting the spot.
Moreover, as the title implies, a goal of the new feature is to help you discover new music. Rather than supplying the most popular tunes, you’ll get a well-balanced mix of lesser known tracks, deep cuts and hits.
Music streaming services struggle to impress me these days, with so many available, but this one seems like a winner.
