Last night, the ever-talented Jackie Greene made his way to Brooklyn Bowl along with an impressive roster of “Friends” for a Grateful Dead “appreciation night” benefitting Rock and Wrap It Up!, a live music-oriented non-profit that collects surplus food from concerts and festivals and delivers it to our nation’s poor and hungry. Greene curated a fully loaded lineup of musicians to round out the benefit’s Jackie Greene & Friends house band, including including Jeff Chimenti (Dead & Company), Mihali Savoulidis (Twiddle), Al Schnier (moe.), Leslie Mendelson and Scott Sharrard (Gregg Allman Band).

The band opened with an extended “Scarlett Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain,” with Mendelson handling the “Scarlett” vocals and Savoulidis singing lead on “Fire,” with Chimenti adding beautiful keyboard flourishes throughout. Greene availed himself wherever possible throughout the tune–and the show as a whole–moving from slide guitar soloing to keys duets with Chimenti to lead vocal turns and back again with ease. Various special guests wound their way into the fray over the course of the night, tackling further favorites like “New Speedway Boogie,” “So Many Roads,” “He’s Gone,” “Shakedown Street,” and “Bertha,” before closing the night with all the musicians onstage for “I Know You Rider” and “Sugaree.”
