It’s official. On July 8th Jay-Z will shut down Broadway from West 53rd to 54th Streets in New York City during rush hour traffic to perform atop the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee near Times Square. With the approval of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who stopped Jay-Z from performing alongside Eminem on the marquee in 2010, the rapper will join the ranks of Phish and Paul McCartney, legends who have both rocked out on the marquee.

Jay-Z’s performance will take part during The Late Show with David Letterman and represent part of his campaign for his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, which will be released early to a million owners of Samsung Galaxy smartphones. A limited amount of lyric sheets to album cuts have already been released, one of which features lyrics from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Jay-Z has also released a promotional clip discussing the inspiration behind album track “Jay Z Blue,” his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Jay-Z has stated that the track deals with his father leaving when he was young and how he was never taught to raise a child or treat a woman with respect.

Magna Carta Holy Grail is slated for release on July 4th, or the 1st for Samsung Galaxy subscribers.
