Phil Lesh resumed his ongoing series of shows commemorating each of the Grateful Dead’s 50 years together last Thursday evening at Terrapin Crossroads, highlighting the year 1983 with a performance from May 13, 1983 at Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, the third consecutive tribute show to feature a classic Bay Area performance.

Last night’s lineup included the Grateful Dead bassist alongside Stu Allen and son Grahame Lesh on guitar, drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford, and keyboard player Scott Guberman. The night’s festivities began again with a brief introduction and retrospective from Lesh and long-time Dead photographer Jay Blakesberg. In another revealing conversation with Blakesberg, Lesh discusses Jerry Garcia’s drug and health issues, set list design, as well as Garcia’s reasoning as to why the Dead didn’t perform the classic “St. Stephen” after 1983. Spoiler alert: Jerry didn’t want to sing the bridge of the song anymore, which Lesh coincidentally wrote.
