Fans of Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival know that the major event always teases their lineup with a series of “Roo Clues” before the big reveal. Today, the festival has posted up a clue that seemingly points to one of our favorite jam groups, Umphrey’s McGee.

The clue reads: “There are strange things done in the midnight sun after the anchor drops.” UM fans will immediately recognize the final two words, Anchor Drops, as the title of UM’s 2004 album. The remainder of the rhyme points to a 19th century poem titled “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” in which the first line is, “There are strange things done in the midnight sun, by the men who moil for gold.” The fact that the poem references a McGee, and that the Roo Clue references Anchor Drops, makes it almost certain that Umphrey’s will be performing at Bonnaroo.

Umphrey’s is no stranger to Bonnaroo, having played the festival in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014. The festival is expected to make a full lineup announcement within the coming weeks, so keep your eyes out for the news! So far, we have heard a report that U2 will be headlining, but that remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Umphrey’s McGee just wrapped up a three night hometown New Year’s run, and will be touring with Spafford, Joshua Redman and more throughout the winter. They also had Ethan Cutkosky (aka Carl from Shameless) in attendance during their NYE run, as you can see here.
