Despite the news of a new Pink Floyd album, The Endless River (set to be released November 10th), fans shouldn’t expect guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason to be out touring in support of their new effort. In a recent Rolling Stone article, Gilmour says there’s no real thought to tour, not without the late Rick Wright (keyboards) who died in 2008 of cancer. In a Rolling Stone interview, Gilmour says, “I’m really enjoying my life and my music. There’s no room for Pink Floyd. The thought of doing any more causes me to break out in a cold sweat.”

The new album was hatched from Floyd’s final jam sessions in 1993. Originally thought to be included with their 1994 release, The Division BellThe Endless River is comprised of strictly instrumental tracks, save the final track, “Louder Than Words.” Of the music, Gilmour said, “Anything we had of value is on this album,” he says. “Trying to do it again would mean using second-best material, and that’s not good enough for me.”

The album is split into four sections, with each section running approximately 15 minutes in length. Mason says it has a “throwback” feel to it, which for any Floyd fan, should spark positive connotations amid the seemingly never-ending rift between Gilmour and long time Floyd bassist Roger Waters

Waters and Gilmour have gotten together on certain occassions in recent years in one-off scenarios, like in 2005 for Live Aid and then again in 2010 for another charity benefit, but in considering on whether to include Waters on the endeavor, it doesn’t sound like Gilmour spent too much time thinking about it. After all, it’s been close to 40 years since the two worked side by side.

He says, “Why on Earth anyone thinks what we do now would have anything to do with him is a mystery to me.” That says it all, doesn’t it? Regardless, The Endless River will bring a lot of joy, and surely some sorrow as Floyd fans all around the globe will be able to sink their teeth into the band’s final album and mark an end to one of the greatest rock bands who ever were.
