Just a few weeks ago, Phil Lesh announced a very special tribute performance at his venue, Terrapin Crossroads. The show was to look at the crossover work between Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, centered around a collaborative tour in 1987 and a subsequent live album in 1989. Of course, the tribute took on a special significance, as Dylan was announced as the winner of a Nobel Prize in the interim.

The Dylan tours were an interesting moment in the Dead’s history, as the band members all reacted differently to having such a venerated legend on stage with them. Bill Kreutzmann recalls never quite calming down while working with such a legend, though he remembers Jerry Garcia fitting right in. Still, to work with Bob Dylan is an impressive feat, certainly worthy of the remembrance.

The show itself was a great tribute, with the first set featuring predominantly Grateful Dead music, and the second featuring all Dylan covers. Lesh assembled a great lineup of players, including Jeff Mattson, Rob Eaton, Rob Barraco, Barry Sless and John Molo. Scott Law and Ross James would also sit in for the Dylan set, lending their hand for the iconic folk ballads.
