Making comments that vaguely resemble Gene Simmons’ assertion that “rock is finally dead”, which we enjoyably rebutted, pop icon Prince spoke to the New York Post about his upcoming HITNRUN album and discussed his views on modern music.

The interview touched on current artists sampling his older work, and Prince doesn’t care about it. “I’m not interested in what happened yesterday,” he says. “There might be music that sounds like me, but what good is that? You’re essentially in the feedback loop… It’s a bad time for music in general. There’s not a lot of pop music in the mainstream that makes you feel scared, that makes you wonder what’s happening.”

Perhaps Prince should look to genres outside of the mainstream for creative inspiration, as we’re not too interested in pop music either. Prince, wherever you are – go down to New Orleans and tell us whether you still think “it’s a bad time for music.”

Prince’s new album is due out on Labor Day, exclusively on TIDAL.
