Ruthie Foster deepens her own roots in “Joy Comes Back,” the title track to her eighth album, that explores the tones of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, in her small-town of Caldwell, Texas spirit, that of course, gave Foster her foundation in music. Under her smooth and soulful vocals is slide guitarist Derek Trucks. The track is so reminiscent of gospel that the producer miked his oak floors and used a couple pairs of high-heeled shoes to exude the sound of heels tapping on the wooden floors during a ceremony that gave percussion for the choir.
The video features Foster and her daughter and friends headed to the church at Willie Nelson‘s ranch, sharing what gives them joy. You might notice a couple of well-known musicians and producers in the video, including Warren Haynes who holds a paper that says “Singing Harmony” gives him joy, as well as Susan Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks who wrote “Enjoying nature with our kids.”
Beautifully executed, the music video promotes the message that joy will come back. “That has a lot to do with how I grew up,” Foster tells NPR. “Not necessarily in the religious sense, but just knowing that things will turn. ‘Joy Comes Back’ was a song I connected to because I know things get better with time. You put your intentions out there and stand your ground, and know that good times and joy are on the way.”
