This weekend, what started out as celebration of David Bowie’s music has become a living, breathing tribute to the legend himself. When The Music Of David Bowie was first announced for April 1st at Carnegie Hall in New York, NY, impresario Michael Dorf intended for the performances to capture the momentum of Bowie’s recently-released album, Blackstar. “The Music Of” has paid tribute to legends like The Who, Paul Simon, David Byrne and more in recent years.

Just one day later, news broke that Bowie had passed away from a long battle with cancer. Suddenly Dorf’s musical celebration became a tribute, as more and more artists were eager to perform Bowie’s influential music as a way of bidding the Thin White Duke a farewell.

“The unexpected death of David Bowie has turned this tribute, which we have work on for the past 7 months, into a poignany celebration of his music by his friends, peers, and fans,” reads the event website. “We are all deeply saddened by this news. The timing of our public on-sale date was bizarre in its timing and the show is taking on many more emotions. RIP David and may God’s love be with you…”

It’s no surprise that tickets sold out practically instantaneously, as the event boasts performances from Mumford & Sons, Blondie, Pixies, Michael Stipe, J Mascis, Rickie Lee Jones, Esperanza Spalding, The Flaming Lips, Ron Pope, Jherek Bischoff, Amanda Palmer & Anna Calvi with Kronos Quartet, Ann Wilson, The Roots, Cat Power, The Polyphonic Spree, Perry Farrell, Jakob Dylan, Holy Holy, Donny McCaslin Group with Mark Guiliana, Jason Lindner and Tony Visconti.
