Last night, Trey Anastasio Band continued their current tour behind 2015’s Paper Wheels with a performance at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK. In addition to their usual mix of material from both the TAB and Phish canon, as well as covers of songs by fallen greats J.J. Cale and Leon Russell, Trey and company took the opportunity to honor Col. Bruce Hampton, whose stranger-than-fiction death at the end of his 70th birthday celebration the night before was still fresh on the minds of all in attendance. The band payed tribute to the Colonel with a show-opening performance of one of his most well-known tunes, “Basically Frightened,” originally released on his 1986 solo album Arkansas. Trey then took a moment to thank Hampton, ending with a touching message: “God bless you Bruce, have a beautiful journey and thank you so much!” You can watch some fan-shot footage of TAB’s rendition of “Basically Frightened” below, via Twitter user @justweiss:

Trey and his Phish cohorts have never been shy about the profound influence the Colonel had on their approach to improvisational music. According to phish.net, The Colonel officially entered the Phish world on 4/30/92, when he joined the boys on stage to jam on “Tweezer.” The Bruce and the Aquarium Rescue Unit also famously joined forces as part of 1992’s H.O.R.D.E. Tour, along with Blues TravelerWidespread PanicThe Spin Doctors, and more. The members of the band have never been shy about showing their appreciation for the influence the Colonel had on their approach to improvisational music. Mike Gordon was interviewed for the 2012 Hampton biopic Basically Frightened: The Musical Madness of Colonel Bruce Hampton, and Jon Fishman played in the Hampton 70 celebration and was onstage when the Colonel collapsed during the show’s encore.
