We all know that Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is an animal, but it looks like he’s not the only primate who can lay down the groove on his signature Shell Pink ’61 Fender Jazz BassKoko, the western lowland gorilla known worldwide for having learned to communicate with humans through a modified version of American Sign Language, looks pretty good wielding Flea’s axe too.

A video posted by The Gorilla Foundation shows Koko learning how to play the bass, while Flea kicks back in amazement, exclaiming, “This is the greatest thing that could ever happen!” While she obviously isn’t a virtuoso just yet, Koko impressively holds the bass correctly, strums some notes, and even adjusts some knobs. Now that is one seriously intelligent ape!

Watch Koko really get down to business in the clip below, and perhaps you’ll donate to Koko’s Team too.
