Although he seems cool in the booth, Laidback Luke’s music is the complete opposite of what his name suggests. It’s like when they call the biggest guy in the crew ‘Tiny’. Over the past few years, Laidback Luke has cemented himself as one of the premiere names in electronic dance music. He benefited by being behind some of the biggest hits right as the genre was taking off in America – ‘Be’, ‘Show Me Love’, ‘Leave The World Behind’. He is one of the few DJ’s who could put out a legitimate greatest hits CD by now. But beyond the hits, Luke always just looks comfortable in the club, rocking the booth and showing the crowd a good time.
With a resume like his, Luke could probably coast on the string of hits he’s produced, yet he never slacks. He’s constantly creating exclusive mash ups to drop in the clubs and creating unique mixes. You never know what you’re going to get with Luke – sometime’s he’s straight house, sometimes he’s more electro, sometimes he’s feeling the hip hop. Last night was the perfect mix of all three, switching styles at random and eventually dropping all of his classics that everyone was dying to hear.
Marquee, as usual, is showing why it’s a force to be reckoned with in the New York nightlife scene. These Wednesday parties have seen only all star DJs, and I expect nothing less coming forth.
