A snowstorm may have shut down the Washington, D.C. area last night, but didn’t deter The Soul Rebels and The Nth Power from bringing down the sold out house at The Hamilton Live last night.
Soul-drenched opener The Nth Power packs a smooth, synergic punch built on the talents of Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk, Beyonce), D.C.’s own, Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band), Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartwick Band, Big Daddy Kane), Weedie Braimah (Toubab Krewe, Kreative Pandemonium) and Nate Edgar (John Brown’s Body). Their sound, a perfect blend of funk-soul goodness, relocated audience members from their seats and onto the dance floor. When The Nth Power gets down, it’s impossible not to groove along with them.
The Soul Rebels brought their funky-brass sound and NOLA spirit to our tundra-like nation’s capital. It may have been winter outside, but The Rebels transported the crowd right to Jazz Fest: Mardi Gras beads, handkerchief dancing and a second line led by Nigel Hall. The band played a medley of Hall and Oates, “I Can’t Go For That,” Heavy D’s “Now That We Found Love,” and Rockwell’s, “Somebody’s Watching Me.”

Later, Nigel Hall joined the band saying, “There’s one thing D.C. and New Orleans have in common. We both love the shit out of Frankie Beverly and Maze” as they started, “Before I Let Go.”
The Nth Power and The Soul Rebels are currently on tour. Catch The Nth Power in Ithaca, NY on the February 24th or check them out at Florida’s Wanee Festival in April and Illinois’ Summer Camp Music Festival in May. The Soul Rebels head up to the Brooklyn Bowl February 26th-28th before heading back to New Orleans for Jazz Fest.
