The Soul Brass Band knows exactly how to bring that New Orleans funk. Led by frontman Derrick Freeman, the band is one of the best modern representations of what a New Orleans Brass Band should sound like. The traditional approach has attracted an all-star cast of musicians, such as Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown, James R. Martin, Terrance Taplin, Kevin Louis, Steven “Tuba Steve” Glenn, Danny Abel, and Aron Lambert, all of whom are seasoned veterans of the New Orleans scene and sound. The band delivers choice covers with an infectious New Orleans flair, and their shows and second-lines always turn into dance parties.
As residents of NOLA, Soul Brass Band is able to participate in the local music community on a regular basis. They are regular guests at WWOZ radio station, which showcases New Orleans music and culture front and center, and they have performed several in-studio sessions for the station’s loyal audience. Thankfully, the radio station records these performances and often posts videos of them on YouTube. Below, you can find two videos of Soul Brass Band getting down at the WWOZ studio. The band delivers and awesome versions of “In Bloom” by Nirvana and “Heartbreak Hotel” by Michael Jackson. These performances are a great showcase of exactly what Soul Brass Band is all about: fun covers with jazzy arrangements and impressive solos.
