Trey Anastasio came into Port Chester, NY, hot last night, opening up an extensive spring tour in support of his most recent album Paper Wheels with the first of two nights at the Capitol Theatre. The night immediately took off with a monstrous “Sand,” and Trey and his compadres showed no sign off slowing down, with the illustrious Capitol Theatre bouncing around the room from start to finish. Trey’s ensemble this time around includes founding Trey Anastasio Band members Tony Markellis and Russ Lawton, Ray Paczkowski, seasoned-percussionist Cyro Baptista, and one of the most powerful horn sections in the game with Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, and James Casey.

After the scorching “Sand” opener, Trey continued to bring on TAB staples “Mozambique” and “Cayman Review” preceding the debut of “This Crazy World I Know,” written by Trey and lyricist companion Tom Marshall. Soon after, Trey decided to throw another enormous curveball, debuting an impressive and tasty cover of Portugal the Man’s “Feel it Still” before ending the set with “Valentine,” Bob Marley’s “Soul Rebel,” and an impressive and extended “Gotta Jibboo”.

With a buzzing crowd and an even more fired-up band, set two took off with TAB classic “Curlews Call.” What happened next was one of the most impressive TAB sets that’s gone down in recent years; flowing straight into “Night Speaks to a Woman,” the set effortlessly navigated through TAB favorites including “Alaska,” “Heavy Things,” “Simple Twist Up Dave,” and ended the set with a monstrous cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.” Jennifer Hartswick absolutely crushed on lead vocals, and the crowd was left with jaws on the floor. Continuing the trend of delightful surprises, Trey and the gang came out for encore, debuting an a capella rendition of the Irish traditional tune “The Parting Glass” followed by “Push on til the Day” to end a TAB show that will be impossible for any one of the 1,800 phans lucky enough to share in the groove.
