Turkuaz has been bringing the heat and the funk to a chilly Southeast, and their stop in Nashville’s Exit/In last Friday was no exception. They followed a stop in Atlanta on Thursday with a barnburner of a show in Nashville. Though their opening act had to cancel their short run, the color-coded funksters were more than happy to expand their headlining slot to a two-set “Evening With” extravaganza.

Playing sold out shows and packing venues across the country, Turkuaz is building momentum. The Brooklyn-based project has become a “don’t miss” act for fans of jam, funk, and soul, drawing crowds ranging from urban hipsters to jam-band aficionados and old-school soul fans alike. Though these crowds might have walked different paths to find the band, all their fans seem to agree: Turkuaz is the real deal.

Though guitarist Dave Brandwein stands front and center decked out in blue, he and his slinky guitar lines are far from the only talent on display. The horn trio of Greg Sanderson and Joshua Schwartz on saxophone alongside Chris Brouwers on trumpet gives Turkuaz an expansive revue-style power that sets them apart from smaller ensembles. Keyboardist Craig Brodhead slips in a little guitar in-between deft fills, and bassist Taylor Shell propels the party forward. Helping keep the balance of energies, vocalists Sammi Garett and Shira Elias offer up fierce vocal leads and move on the rock-solid foundation provided by drummer Michelangelo Carubba.
