On Wednesday night, New York City’s City Winery hosted a special tribute to the late Gregg Allman dubbed Southern Blood, which was also the title of Allman’s final record that was released posthumously this year. The Southern Blood concert served as a benefit show for the GRAMMY Museum as well as in collaboration with Rounder Records. The lineup included family and friends alike, including Devon Allman, Layla Brooklyn AllmanWarren HaynesGraham NashBill GibbonsAlison KraussLuther & Cody DickinsonTommy Emmanuel, and Jackie Greene. The evening double served as the one year anniversary of the passing of Butch Trucks, founding member and original drummer of the Allman Brothers Band. With music of the Allman Brothers in the air, it was a beautiful evening of spiritual celebration.

The celebrations opened up with a panel discussion with Scott Sharrard, Devon Allman, Layla Brooklyn Allman, and Luther & Cody Dickinson. Then, the evening breaks into song for an extended set of music that featured a rotating cast of musicians. Before closing the night with an anthemic “Whipping Post”, Scott Sharrard approached the mic to retell his experience in co-writing “My Only True Friend” with Gregg Allman before his passing. The song ultimately served as the exclamation point at the end of a best-selling novel.
