On April 11th, 2017, heavyweight funk-fusion act Jamiroquai lost one of their own when founding member and ex-keyboardist Toby Grafftey-Smith passed away at the age of 46 after secretly battling cancer for multiple years. In the time since, Jamiroquai has been in the news a lot, with the band recently performing their first concerts on U.S. soil for the first time in 13 years. However, Jamiroquai made news in an unexpected way this weekend when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle drove a certain £350,000 electric Jaguar convertible to their wedding reception at the Frogmore House in Windsor as part of the Royal Wedding.
As noted in the Daily Mail, the E-Type converted-electric vehicle previously belonged to Jamiroquai’s Toby Grafftey-Smith, though for the Royal Wedding, the car also sported a special personalized license plate that read “E190518″—with the numbers representing the date of the happy couple’s wedding. As Grafftey-Smith’s widow, Gabriella Crewe-Read told the Daily Mail, “The royal wedding car was bought from Toby,” later adding “His brilliance is everywhere.”
It’s well noted that Grafftey-Smith was a classic car enthusiast, much like Jamiroquai’s frontman Jay Kay. Appropriately, on the day of the wedding, Kay took to Instagram to show off the vehicle he was taking to the Royal Wedding—a 1972 Rolls-Royce Corniche, which Kay describes in the video as “suitable” for the special day.
