As expected, John Mayer dropped by HQ Trivia for a special Father’s Day edition of the popular app-based game show on Sunday night. The Dead & Company guitarist joined show host and noted jam band fan Scott Rogowsky for the production, which ran noticeably longer than HQ Trivia’s usual offerings.

Rogowsky, who is known for slipping Phish and Grateful Dead references into his broadcasts, didn’t disappoint with Mayer by his side. Before bringing out the guitarist (who Rogowsky introduced as his own father), the host declared that fans should “never miss a Sunday night show”. What followed was a seemingly endless barrage of Grateful Dead references, such as “half-step / Mississippi Uptown / Question 2” and “you have to move / really have to move / on to Question 3”.

In fact, every one of last night’s questions was introduced with reconfigured Grateful Dead lyrics drawn from songs like “Eyes Of The World”, “Uncle John’s Band”, and “Truckin’”. Rogowsky even threw in his usual Phish reference, a nod to the Talking Heads, and plenty of jokes about Mayer and/or Father’s Day. Oh, and there’s also a cameo appearance from Rogowsky’s actual father.

HQ Trivia with John Mayer

As previously reported, Mayer was able to join Rogowsky at HQ Trivia’s New York City headquarters because he was in town with Dead & Company for a two-night stand at Citi Field. Take a look at our recaps from Night One and Night Two of the run.
