Today, the musical brethren of the late Tom Petty have shared a new video featuring an alternate take on Heartbreakers tune “You and Me”. The new release comes as part of the leadup to An American Treasure, the extensive upcoming compilation of unreleased Petty studio and live cuts and alternate versions of popular songs.

The new montage-style video incorporates old personal photos of Petty in addition to clips of footage submitted by his adoring fans. The track itself, recorded in 2007 though never released, takes a reimagined, stripped-down approach to “You and Me”, originally from 2002’s The Last DJ. On this new take, the song is transformed from a driving groove to a wistful ballad, and the emotional weight added by the change speaks for itself.

An American Treasure will mark the first new release from Tom Petty’s camp since his sudden passing in October of last year. The Tom Petty An American Treasure set is due to be released on September 28th via Reprise Records, less than a week shy of the first anniversary of his death.

As Tom’s daughter, Adria Petty, and widow, Dana Petty elaborated on this “labor of love” in its original announcement press release,

Everyone involved in this project chose each track with tremendous care and deep respect for the body of work Tom Petty created over the course of 40 years. He also accumulated a wealth of unreleased music in his vaults, and we have collectively uncovered one gem after another that will keep us all listening and discovering new facets of Tom’s talent for many years to come. We can’t wait to share with Tom’s fans this musical portrait of an artist who deeply affected our culture and indelibly touched the lives of fans the world over.
