On Thursday night, Austin-based rock band The Bright Light Social Hour made a stop at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. The rock quartet is currently touring around the country in promotion of their latest studio effort, 2019’s Jude Vol. I. The band’s headlining performance saw them treating their New York Fans–who braved the city’s dreary spring weather to make it to the lower Manhattan venue–to a mix of new material from their recent release, along with some older favorites.

The band started their set with “Open Borders”, a slightly politically-charged song with dreamy synths leading the charge and guitarist Curtis Roush handling the vocal duties. Roush continued with another new tune off of Jude Vol. I with a soulful and lively rendition of “Darling You”. The show continued with the band’s attempt at performing “Harder Out Here” a song they’d written a few years back as the opening theme for Amazon‘s original series, Sneaky Pete.

Next up was another new song from Jude Vol. I with “She Wanna Love You”, which started out by easing the listener into a dreamy rock setting before gradually ascending into a spacey dance jam. The new tunes continued with “My Boy”, followed by “Lie To Me” with Roush, bassist Jackie O’Brien and keyboardist/guitarist Edward Braillif all stepping up to their microphones for the song’s group vocals during the chorus lines.

The band finally brought out some of their older material as the set charged forward into its latter half, with Roush again leading the audience through a psychedelic dreamscape during “Dreamlove” from 2015’s Space Is Still the Place. O’Brien followed that up with his punchy bass intro and the tribal-like chantings of “Ghost Dance” before turning back to the Jude tracklisting for an adrenaline-pumping rendition of “Give To Me Words” to close the set.

Roush and O’Brien would return to the stage to start their encore with a duet version of “I Need Your Love”, with O’Brien trading his bass in exchange for a guitar to perform the soulful tune. The band then sent fans off into the New York night with a highly psychedelic cover of The Beatles‘ “Tomorrow Never Knows”.
