Eddie Vedder brought The Earthlings Tour through Chicago, IL’s Auditorium Theatre on Wednesday night for the first of two shows at The Windy City venue. The Pearl Jam frontman led his band through a variety of originals from his latest solo album, Earthling, as well as some timeless covers by artists like The Beatles, The Who, and more.
Coming off shows at New York, NY’s Beacon Theatre and Newark, NJ’s NJPAC, Vedder descended upon Chicago for the midweek show with the same all-star cast of characters he will have all tour. The group of musicians included Red Hot Chili Peppers members Chad Smith (drums) and Josh Klinghoffer (guitar), as well as Chris Chaney (bass), Andrew Watt (guitar), and the multi-instrumentalist Glen Hansard.
Vedder led The Earthlings through four covers to open the evening, including R.E.M.‘s “Drive”, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers‘ “Room at the Top”, The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun”, and The Who’s “I’m One”. As the night progressed, the band delivered takes on songs from the new album, such as “Invincible”, “The Haves”, “Rose of Jericho”, and the somber tune about his late sibling, “Brother the Cloud“. Before the show would end, Eddie made sure to offer some Pearl Jam classics like “Better Man” and “Porch”, while also channeling his inner George Harrison on “Isn’t It A Pity”. Other covers included Pretenders‘ “Precious”, Indio‘s “Hard Sun”, and Pete Townsend‘s “Give Blood”.
