Over 1,000 Musicians Cover "My Hero" To Honor Late Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins [Videos]

Over 1,000 musicians from 25 countries gathered at Stade de France in Paris over the weekend for a Rockin’ 1000 performance that included covers of The Who, Rage Against The Machine, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, and Guns N’ Roses, plus a tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Rockin’ 1000 initially launched as a way to convince Foo Fighters to play in the small town of Cesena, Italy. The project’s origins were documented in the 2020 documentary We Are the Thousand. Since forming in 2015, Rockin’ 1000 has grown into a recurring celebration of rock music, with hundreds of singers and instrumentalists coming together to participate in performances.

Saturday’s concert was the first in nearly three years due to the pandemic. The performance drew a crowd of 50,000 spectators and featured covers of several iconic rock songs, but the highlight was a bombastic rendition of Foo Fighter’s “My Hero” dedicated to the band’s late drummer. Given the special connection between Rockin’ 1000 and Foo Fighters, the performance was a fitting tribute to the beloved rock star.

Earlier this year, Rockin’ 1000 released another tribute to Taylor Hawkins with drummers playing Foo Fighter’s “Learn To Fly” in Turin, Italy. “Learn To Fly” was the song that the group originally recorded in 2015 for its effort to attract Foo Fighters to play in Cesena.
