For the first time in the band’s 14-year history, Big Something has a new member with the addition of bassist Matt Laird. The 26-year-old from Durham, NC fills the low-end slot recently vacated by founding bassist Doug Marshall.
Following the announcement of Marshall’s departure last month, the North Carolina electro-prog-funk jam band staged a series of farewell shows across Asheville and Charleston, SC. His final performances with the band were a three-night run at Charleston Pour House on February 9th–11th.
“Thank you so much for your incredible show of support for Doug and the band over the past few weeks,” Big Something wrote on social media. “His farewell shows in Charleston and Asheville were some of our favorites of all time thanks in large part to the energy and love you brought to the room each night. We appreciate you all and our community so much and are so excited to continue this journey together.”
Big Something’s new bass player is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro where he performed with the funk-pop band Reliably Bad. According to Big Something, Laird has been playing music since he was 5 years old and “has already done an amazing job learning our catalog and honoring Doug’s parts while adding a new improvisational energy that we are really excited to tap into.”
