The Wood Brothers‘ Oliver Wood teams up with California folk quintet The Brothers Comatose on a cover of “Up Above My Head”, popularized by rock and roll pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Recorded by RoAn Gibson at Old Settler’s Music Festival in Dale, TX, just outside of Austin. The Wood Brothers headlined the festival, which took place April 20th–23rd, alongside Yola, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Shovels & Rope, and Elephant Revival.
The video shows Oliver Wood with his guitar joined by Alex Morrison on banjo, Scott Padden on bass, Philip Brezina on violin, Greg Fleischut on mandolin, and Ben Morrison, who usually plays guitar, on a shaker that looks like a banana. Fleischut takes center stage with a brief mandolin solo, but it’s the group’s perfectly blended vocal harmonies that take the performance to the next level.
