Wakarusa Music Festival 2013
With sax skills as smooth as Nutella on velvet, GRiZ has a unique style not many other performers can match right now. At the age of 23, the sky is the limit for this Metro-Detroit Native. Classically trained on the piano and sax as a kid, he spiked an interest in hip-hop instrumentals at age 14, and hasn’t looked back since. Electro-soul, bass-infused hip-hop are some ways to describe the stylings of GRiZ, but what sets him apart are the the live performances and stylistic blends of his Alto Saxophone. That being said, “Smash the Funk” couldn’t be a better overall snapshot to show what GRiZ is all about.
Shot over the course of 3 sold out shows in Boulder, Denver and at Red Rocks. “Smash the Funk” showcases not only his musical talents but also gives us a little insight to his life this past year and some of his musical background. A young, hard working musician, whom with only a year under his belt is already turning heads wherever he plays.
“This video is a look into my brief voyage as an artist and also behind the scenes of three sold out Colorado shows (Boulder, Denver, and Red Rocks.) I also wanted to do something completely different and have fun with the video so I took some old gear that had seen its day and retired it to the shooting range (it looks pretty badass in slow motion). I also talk a bit about what music means to me and where I have come from. Nearing the first anniversary of my debut album Mad LiberationI wanted to release this video that has been a journey itself to create.” – GriZ
